Hengki Lee
Hengki Lee is a silhouette photographer who uses an individual as the main focus in many of his photo's, to me this represents an isolation from society but a connection with the natural world around them as it is just the figure and their environment around them in the image. This also links with the natural relationship we, as humans, have with nature. Hengki also edits all his images with a monochrome effect, this creates a solid black shadow almost for the silhouette and different tones of grey in the background for the sky ranging from deep dull greys into clearer, purer white/greys. This creates a sense of loneliness and stillness, to me it gives the image a sense of immortality, as if that that moment will last forever for that individual. However, as the silhouette has no detail you would commonly expect it to make it impersonal, but i feel it has the opposite effect. In my opinion, i feel like the fact that the silhouette has no detail leaves you with a sense of mystery as it could be anybody and this allows you to relate more to the image than if their was any detail. I feel like Hengki's images can be easily interpreted by anyone as everyone goes through a time in their lives when they feel disconnected and would therefore place themselves into the photo's as the lone figure. In most of his photo's Hengki's figures are doing an activity, such as running or riding a bike. To me this shows self-motivation and independence as the figures are overcoming obstacles which are in their way by themselves, for me this is quite inspirational as it shows that to achieve your goals all you need is yourself and persistence however this can be interpreted differently by different types of people. Another common factor in Hengki's images is that many of them feature the moon, and when they do it's often a pure white which directly contrasts with the black of the silhouette and the deep grey in the sky.
